Balinese Vintage Folk Art Coin Angel Dolls

Made from Kepeng coins, or Chinese coins, which date back from the 7th century. Originally used in commerce to replace barter, they were gradually phased out, and since have been used in Bali in the decorative arts and superstitious rituals, giving them the nickname “magic coins”. Our vintage statues, one male god and one female goddess, are made from the kepeng coins knitted together with black thread over an armature to create these unique folk-art sculptures.

Wired hooks on their backs let them hang from the wall, with wings to keep them afloat. Carved wooden hands and feet contrast dark the metal coins with the painted wooden faces gazing in wonder. They are of an unknown age, I found them in an antique store in Bali, and though they might be reproductions of ancient pieces, their essence is definitely old world. A magical gift to give a special person.

Approximately 14" H x 8" W x 4" L.
