Puppets - Wayang Golek Semar

This great jester clown of the wayang theater is Semar, from Hindu mythology. With his big belly (he swallowed the world) his black body is the night and his white face is the day, and he always has his purse filled with tricks to lighten the mood. He is famous for his comedic abilities. This vintage Semar is beautifully hand painted, carved in wood, with a tuft of white hair. I found him in an antique store in Central Java, and though he is an older puppet, his age is unknown. For sure he is a treasure!
